History, headlines from The Herald-Press

NEWSPAPER EDITOR: Mike Perkins served as editor of The Herald-Press for 30 years, and worked at the newspaper another 11 years from 1968 to 2008. Perkins will sharewhat he considers to be the Top 10 local news stories and some history on the newspaper at the Historical Museum on Nov. 20.

Mike Perkins, of Huntington, will present “Cold Notes: Mike Perkins Remembers The Herald-Press with Rick Beemer” on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m., at the Huntington County Historical Museum.

Perkins will talk about what he considers to be the Top 10 local news stories – incidents or developments – that took place during the time he was editor of The Huntington Herald-Press.

He’ll count them down, No. 10 to No. 1.

He will also spend some time with a brief history of the newspaper, his childhood attachment to newspapers and his time at the Herald-Press prior to becoming editor, some of the prominent people he was able to meet and/or interview during his time there, and a few of his most memorable Herald-Press colleagues.

Perkins grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, attended Indiana University and graduated magna cum laude in 1980 from Huntington College with a bachelor’s degree in communications.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve (1967-73), with active duty deployment in the Western Pacific (1969-70).

He worked at The Huntington Herald-Press from 1967 to 2008, and was named editor in 1978. He was also a member of Huntington University’s adjunct faculty from 1981 to 2007. He is currently the director of the Parkview Huntington Hospital Foundation.

Current memberships include: Huntington County Honors board of directors; Huntington County Historical Society board of directors; Huntington Rotary Club (past president, 1999-2000); Cosmopolitan Club; and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

He and his wife, Jan, are the parents of four children, and the grandparents of seven.
