Huntington North edged by Concordia Lutheran

by Eric Andrews - eandrews@h-ponline.com

In a matchup rescheduled from Sept. 2, the Huntington North boys tennis team hosted Concordia Lutheran on Monday, but fell 3–2 to the visiting Cadets.

The loss dropped the Vikings’ season record to 3–4.

Huntington North again trotted out the same lineup for the third match in a row, seeming to have found a consistent look after tinkering with the lineup early in the season.

Sophomore Carson Kitchen continued his strong season with a pair of 6–3 set wins at first singles over Concordia Lutheran’s Ben Gerig.

Sophomore Jacob Daugherty came up short in second singles action, as Jacob Felton of the Cadets grabbed a 6–3 victory in set one before squeezing past Daugherty 7–5 in the second set.

The third singles match also ended in favor of Concordia Lutheran, as sophomore Reid Eckert fell 1–6, 4–6 to Hunter Ehle.

Both doubles matchups went to a third set, as juniors Thomas Schweller and Noah Zahn scored a first doubles win over the Cadets’ Jon and Mason Pickett with 6–2, 3–6 and 6–4 set outcomes.

However, Concordia Lutheran picked up the third and decisive point in second doubles action, as Jordan Wright and Ryan Snider overcame an early deficit to Huntington North senior Isaac Eckert and sophomore Matthew Weill, who won set one 6–4, before grabbing sets two and three by 6–4 and 6–2 margins, respectively, to put away the overall match win for the Cadets.

The Vikings will return to the court on Thursday, traveling to resume their Northeast 8 Conference schedule at New Haven. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
