Evensong September 2019, Club Saxophone free concert

The new season of Trinity UMC’s Evensong Concert Series kicks off with Club Saxophone, presenting a program of music in a wide variety of styles, and employing several different members of the saxophone instrument “family.” Information about Club Saxophone follows, as well as contact details for more information. Organized in 2016, Huntington Club Saxophone is an ensemble of saxophone players from Huntington County. The group includes instruments as small as the sopranino and as large as the bass. Today they will be using the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. Current Club Saxophone members’ ages are from the 20s to the 70s, and the styles of music are varied, including sacred, jazz, popular, concert, and specialty/novelty music. The members of Club Saxophone have deep ties to the Huntington community, and include Ralph Gordon, Barry Jamison, Tom McElhaney, Bridget Parker, Scot Shaffer, and Chris Whitacre.

Ralph Gordon (alto), is an alumnus of HNHS and Indiana Wesleyan, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Informational Systems and has to date spent 32 years in law enforcement. He has played saxophone since 1968. He is a member of the Erie Band, Erie Jazz Band and is founding member of Club Saxophone.

Barry Jamison (soprano) has taught music in public schools for over 30 years, almost all of it in Huntington County, currently at Andrews and Roanoke Elementary. He graduated from Huntington North where he received the John Philip Sousa Award and earned his college degree from Olivet Nazarene University. He has been a singer and freelance saxophonist for many years, and is a member of the Fort Wayne-based Heartland Sings, the Erie Jazz Band and Club Saxophone.

Tom McElhaney (alto), is a second-generation member of the Erie Band, and was the Director of from 1976-78. He graduated from high school in Huntington County where he played in bands led by Delmar Wiesner, and was among the first students to receive the J. P. Sousa Award upon graduation. He graduated from DePauw and studied in graduate school with renowned saxophonist Cecil Leeson. He was a band director in Huntington County at Huntington Township and Crestview Junior High School, and also performs with the Erie Jazz Band and Club Saxophone.

Bridget Parker (tenor), an outdoor enthusiast, loves boating, hiking, snow skiing, animals, and competes in horseback riding. She was a veteran of the instrumental music program at Huntington North, where she performed in concert bands for three years and the Lime City Jazz Orchestra for four. She is a member of the Erie Jazz Band in addition to Club Saxophone.

Scot Shaffer (baritone and bass) began playing the saxophone in fifth grade and participated in concert, marching, pep, and jazz bands in high school. While attending Grace College, Scot studied saxophone with Jerry Franks and participated in the vocal/instrumental group Sound Investment. Scot has played in The Main Street Jazz Band, the community jazz band of Berne, and since moving back to Huntington, has been a member of the Erie Band, Erie Jazz Band and Club Saxophone. He is a member and serves on the board of the Community Choirs of Huntington County. Scot served in the United States Army and Army National Guard for twenty years.

Chris Whitacre (tenor) is a graduate of Huntington North High School where he received the Sousa Award, and Ball State where he received degrees in instrumental music education and saxophone, studying with Cecil Leeson and Brian Minor. He has been the Director of the Erie and Huntington North Bands, is a member of the Erie Band, Club Saxophone, and is the Director of the Erie Jazz Band.
