The Huntington North girls golf team opened up their head-to-head match play on Wednesday at Norwood Golf Club in Huntington, falling 188–204 to Leo in a Northeast 8 Conference (NE8) battle.

The loss started the Lady Vikes’ 2019 overall record and NE8 record at 0–1 after playing in a pair of tournaments to open the season.

Sophomore Grace Dill paced Huntington North with a 40 in the match, three shots shy of Leo’s Anna Munson, who took home medalist honors with a 37.

“Grace played great tonight; (I am) really proud of her,” said head coach Ron Vinson. “I didn’t watch a lot of her tonight, but looking at her stats, she hit it pretty straight and putted well.”

Sophomore Josie Eckert turned in a personal-best score of 52 in the No. 3 position to finish second on the Vikings, while sophomore Megan Stephan carded a 55 out of the No. 2 spot to place third on the team.

Sophomore Haley Newton rounded out Huntington North’s scoring quartet with a 57 out of the No. 5 spot, while freshman Carley Roth completed the Lady Vikes’ varsity lineup in fifth place with a non-scoring 61 in the No. 4 position.

“They did just fine,” Vinson said. “Putting was the reason for higher scores for most of the girls. I think (they did well) competing; they don’t give up and that’s a great thing to see. They keep that up and their scores will come down. … We are young and playing the girls (no seniors) a lot on varsity is only going to make us better each time we tee it up.”

Next up on Huntington North’s schedule is the Concordia Invite on Saturday at Foster Park Golf Course in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Tee time is slated for 9 a.m.

The Vikings will return to match play early next week with a pair of road duels, facing Bishop Dwenger on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and East Noble in a NE8 contest on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
