S.R. 9 roadwork begins Monday

by Andrew Maciejewski - amaciejewski@h-ponline.com

People driving on State Road 9 toward and into Whitley County should be prepared to stop, after the Indiana Department of Transportation announced plans for a resurfacing project expected to start Monday.

On or after July 15 depending on weather, INDOT communications specialist Nicole Hacha-Thomas said northbound and southbound traffic on portions of S.R. 9, between S.R. 14 and S.R. 205, will share one lane as crews be mill and resurface alternating sides of the two-lane highway. She said flaggers will direct traffic, and an INDOT press release warns drivers to beware of possible stopped traffic within the construction zone.

INDOT expects the project to be completed by late October, weather permitting.

Hacha-Thomas said Whitley County Road E. 400 S. will be temporarily closed as crews replace a pipe under the roadway. The construction will take place near the intersection of S.R. 9 and C.R. E 400 S. and will cause the road to be closed for up to seven days, according to INDOT reports. INDOT says local detours will be posted in advance of the closure.

“INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through any active work zone,” Hacha-Thomas wrote in the release.

E&B Paving received the project bid for $2.5 million, which includes the resurface of S.R. 5 in Whitley counties.
