DCS tip leads to arrest

by Andrew Maciejewski - amaciejewski@h-ponline.com

Police say an Andrews man sexually abused a child under the age of 14 after an investigation opened following a Department of Child Services (DCS) alert on June 29, 2019.

Robert Christopher Brown, 50, last known address 8192 W. 168 N., was arraigned July 8 for a Level 1 felony charge of child molestation, according to Huntington Circuit Court records.

The victim told police the perpetrator had a smashed hand, according to police records. Police say Brown’s hand is still in a cast after it was crushed by a forklift during a workplace injury.

The child said the abuse occurred multiple times.

Brown initially said the victim told him the perpetrator was “Chris with the brown skin” but allegedly changed his story once police told him the information they’d gathered, according to police reports.

Brown agreed to a polygraph test, which he failed, according to police reports. Police say he changed his story during the interrogation “because that is the information that (the polygraph administrator) wanted to hear.”

After the polygraph test, Huntington Police Department detective Dylan Lagonegro said Brown “almost immediately” said he sexually abused her, Lagonegro wrote in his report.

Brown in currently in custody at the Huntington County Jail.

Brown intends to hire private counsel, but no attorney was chosen or available for comment as of deadline Monday.

A status conference is scheduled for July 15 at 8 a.m. in Huntington Circuit Court.

A pretrial conference is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 26 at 8 a.m.
