SOFTBALL

The Huntington North softball team picked up their first victory in May on Wednesday night, topping Northeast 8 Conference (NE8) foe Norwell 5–2 to improve the Vikings’ season record to 8–9 with a 1–4 NE8 mark.

Huntington North started the scoring in the top of the second, as Macy Lange sent an RBI single to center field to bring home Katie Melcher for a 1–0 Viking lead.

Norwell evened the contest at 1–1 in the bottom of the third via a passed ball, but Huntington North took the lead right back in the top of the fourth compliments of an RBI double by Erika Vinson to plate Lange for a 2–1 Viking advantage.

The Knights got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an error by the Huntington North defense, tying the game at 2–2.

However, Megan Stephan quickly changed the Vikings’ fortune in the top of the fifth, crushing a two-run bomb over the wall in left field to give Huntington North a 4–2 lead, scoring Laney Shaw in the process.

The Vikings tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as Stephan sent a line drive to center field to plate Kodi Douglass for a 5–2 Huntington North advantage.

Norwell failed to break through the rest of the way, recording just one base runner over the final two innings to salt away the 5–2 victory for the Vikings.

Sydney Selvage earned the victory on the mound for Huntington North, tossing four innings while allowing three hits and two unearned runs and striking out one Knight in the start for the Vikings.

Shaw came on in relief to throw the final three innings, giving up just one hit and no runs while striking out a trio of Norwell batters.

Huntington North is scheduled to return to the field on Friday for a home non-conference matchup against Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

GIRLS TENNIS

The Huntington North girls tennis team resumed their busy week on the court on Wednesday, falling 4–1 to Homestead in a non-conference matchup. The loss dropped the Vikings’ season record to 11–3.

Jessica Henline picked up the lone victory of the day for Huntington North in first singles action, defeating Homestead’s Jenna Lewis in straight sets, 6–2 and 6–1.

The Spartans cruised in second and third singles play, as Homestead’s Olivia Creech and Madison Zitlaw both scored 6–0, 6–1 wins over Emily Bokel and Emily Daas of the Vikings, respectively.

The success for the Spartans continued in doubles action, as Payton Krahn and Morgan Render scored a 6–0, 6–2 victory in first doubles play over Huntington North’s Macy Wohlford and Maisy Kesler, while Pravi Jain and Anna Topmiller scored a 6–1, 6–1 win over Crosley Stanley and Sydney Smekens of the Vikings in second doubles action.

Huntington North will host South Adams on Friday for the Vikings’ Senior Day match. The Senior Day celebrations will begin at 4:45 p.m.
