Vikings compete in indoor meets

The Huntington North boys and girls track teams continued their seasons on Saturday, as the boys team competed at the Trine HSR Qualifier No. 2 at Trine University in Angola, Indiana, while the girls team competed at the IWU HSR Qualifier No. 3 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.

On the boys side, senior Ricky Haught paced Huntington North in the 60 meter dash, finishing in 20th place with a time of 7.69 seconds.

Freshman Micah Beal and sophomore Tony Clor also competed in the 60 meter dash, clocking in with times of 7.98 seconds (32nd place) and 8.21 seconds (34th place), respectively.

In the 3,200 meter run, senior Brock Spahr took the title with a winning time of 9:50.80, nearly seven seconds faster than the next-closest finisher.

Senior Drew Davis also ran the event, finishing in seventh place with a time of 10:37.42. Senior Devin Suchciki also competed in the event but did not register a time.

Junior Nate Burns and senior Logan Hippensteel represented the Vikings in the 60 meter hurdles, posting times of 9.82 seconds (seventh place) and 10.47 seconds (15th place), respectively.

In the long jump, Haught took home top honors with a jump of 21 feet and 1.5 inches.

Clor and freshman Chris Covey also participated in the long jump, as Clor measured a jump of 16 feet and 1.5 inches, good for 20th place, while Covey finished 25th place with a jump of 15 feet and 1.75 inches.

A trio of Vikings competed in the shot put, with senior Max Hughes pacing the group with a distance of 40 feet to earn seventh place.

Senior Christian Graft finished closely behind Hughes with a distance of 38 feet and five inches, good for ninth place. Sophomore Dayne Pefley recorded a 33 feet and 2.5 inch distance to finish 22nd in the event.

Huntington North also competed in the meet’s relays, with two quartets in both the 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay and one group in both the 4x800 relay and 4,000 meter distance medley relay.

Covey, Burns, Hughes and Beal led the Vikings in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, finishing sixth with a time of 1:40.89 and fourth with a time of 3:45.03, respectively.

Junior Isaiah Clampitt, senior Jake Wust, sophomore Connor Miller and senior Alex Bishop finished 11th in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:12.49, while Clampitt, sophomore Lawson Shearer, Wust and freshman Harrison Niswander earned a fifth-place finish in the 4,000 meter distance medley relay with a time of 11:58.86.

On the girls side, three Vikings competed in the 60 meter dash. Sophomore Lily Clanin set a season record with a time of 8.77 seconds, good for 25th place. Senior Peyton Dorsett clocked in at 8.85 seconds in 35th place, while sophomore Christine Hiday also established a season record with a time of 9.21 seconds to finish in 52nd place.

Freshman Isabel Niswander finished 19th in the shot put with a distance of 29 feet and 1.5 inches, a new personal record. Sophomore Maddie Husband placed 31st in the event with a distance of 27 feet and 2.5 inches.

Sophomore Preslee Williams and Dorsett both competed in the high jump, with Williams tying for fifth place with a jump of 4 feet and 10 inches, while Dorsett recorded a season record jump of 4 feet and six inches, tying for ninth in the event.

Senior Veronika Russell established a new personal record in the pole vault with a 9-foot height, good for third place.

In the long jump, Dorsett and Clanin both had good showings, with Dorsett setting a new personal record of 14 feet and 5.25 inches to earn ninth place, while Clanin established a season record of 12 feet and 11.25 inches to finish 16th in the event.

In the relays, Huntington North placed sixth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:56.57, 11th in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:36.10, third in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:15.95 and third in the distance medley relay with a time of 13:14.26.

Huntington North’s boys team will return to the track on March 19 when they host Homestead at 5 p.m. The girls team will be in action next at the HSR Finals, held on March 23 at Indiana Wesleyan at 10 a.m.
