The Huntington North boys and girls swim teams were in action on Monday night, taking on Oak Hill in Converse, Indiana.

The boys team lost their meet 125–50, while the girls team fell 110–73 to the Eagles.

The boys picked up five event victories throughout their meet, with four individual titles and one team relay win.

Freshman Colten Schulte led the way for the Vikings by winning two events during the meet. Schulte earned victories in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:00.40 and the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:07.49.

Junior Nathan York took home the title in the 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing in 1:10.40.

Senior Keegan Mautz rounded out the Vikings’ individual victories in the 50 Yard Freestyle, finishing with a time of 26.76.

The boys team’s relay win came in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, with the team’s quartet of Schulte, sophomore Cole Davidson, Mautz and York finishing the race in a time of 2:01.22, just 0.12 seconds faster than Oak Hill’s second-place quartet thanks to a mad dash in the final leg by York.

The team also earned a trio of second-place finishes from Davidson (200 Yard Freestyle, 2:15.31), Mautz (500 Yard Freestyle, 5:59.29) and York, Mautz, Schulte and Davidson (400 Yard Freestyle Relay, 4:04.81).

The girls team, meanwhile, claimed victories in six events, with four coming in individual events and two coming in team relays.

Senior Macy Lange picked up a win in the 200 Yard IM, finishing with a time of 2:37.44. Lange placed second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke later in the meet with a time of 1:21.79.

Junior Laney Shaw grabbed a win in the 50 Yard Freestyle in what was, for the event, a wide margin of victory with a time of 28.31, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Shaw later earned a second-place finish in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:02.16.

Junior Allie Aschliman cruised to victory in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:05.96, six seconds ahead of the next-closest swimmer. Aschliman also earned a second-place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle event. Her time of 2:15.09 was just 0.27 seconds off the winning pace.

Junior Alyssa Brinkman rounded out Huntington North’s individual victories, taking home the title in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:15.10.

The Vikings’ relay wins both came from the same four swimmers, as Brinkman, Lange, Aschliman and Shaw claimed the title in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:09.56, barely out-touching Oak Hill’s best quartet for the win. Shaw, Brinkman, Lange and Aschliman then won the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 4:22.64, blowing away the competition to wrap up the team’s meet.

Head coach Mycal Rodenbeck felt encouraged with the teams’ times despite the results, given the team felt tired coming off their holiday break. Rodenbeck stated multiple swimmers established new personal-best times against Oak Hill and noted how he is hopeful for the future since many swimmers posted strong times despite feeling slow.

The Vikings hosted Wabash on Tuesday night at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA, but results were not available as of The Herald-Press’s deadline.

Huntington North’s swim teams will compete in the Northeast 8 Conference meet on Jan. 12, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
