HNHS band gets gold

BY HEATHER COX - hcox@h-ponline.com

Huntington North High School’s Marching Vikes have ended their marching season on a positive note, as they earned a gold rating at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSA) Regional Competition in October.

According to Michael Petek, the band’s director, the band was in an Open B class and competed at Chesterton High School. This rating is the highest scoring bracket, which must be 70 points or above.

The last time the band achieved this type of rating was nearly 10 years ago.

“The last time Huntington North’s marching band earned a Gold Rating competing in an Open Class Regional was 2009. The score they received at this competition was the highest any marching band from Huntington North has earned since 2001,” Petek explained.

Petek had one word to describe and summarize the season overall: “excellent.”

Though the band is done with competing for the season, they will be performing in the Huntington Veterans Day parade on November 10 and will then transition into basketball pep band as well as concert season.
