Trash fee approved on first reading

Huntington City residents can expect to begin paying a trash collection fee this year, after the Huntington Common Council approved the first reading of an ordinance establishing pickup fees, unanimously.

No one from the public spoke at the public hearing for the proposed trash collection fees, Tuesday, which presented the proposed monthly waste removal fee for the next four years. Advanced Disposal was chosen for the contract.

The fees will increase each year, starting at $8.54 per month from December 2018 to November 2019, $8.80 per month from December 2019 to November 2020, $9.06 per month from December 2020 to November 2021 and $9.33 per month from December 2021 to November 2022.

Public Works and Engineering Services director Anthony Goodnight said the contractor will be in charge of picking up the old trash bins and distributing new ones. He also said each additional bin will require an additional fee and those who wish to purchase additional bins must contact Advanced Disposal.

I other business, the Council approved the second reading of an ordinance amending fishing and hunting rules in City parks.

The ordinance allows fishing in designated areas, in accordance with state fishing rules and regulations. The ordinance makes it clear that spear fishing and ice fishing is prohibited in city parks. Hunting is not allowed in any city park, without permission of the superintendent, according to the ordinance.

The Huntington Common Council will hold a public hearing on Sept. 25 at 6:45 a.m., before their regularly scheduled meeting, in regards to the City salary ordinance and appropriation ordinance for 2019.

Appropriations and the salary ordinance must be adopted by Nov. 1, 2018.
