Kids Kampus expands preschool services

by Andrew Maciejewski - amaciejewski@h-ponline.com

Pathfinder Services’ Kids Kampus will have room for 20 more preschool students this year, through funding from a state grant.

This is the first time Indiana Family and Social Services Administration awarded the Early Learning Alliance of Huntington County a grant that will allow Kids Kampus to expand preschool offerings. The expansion grant will support staffing and training needs, as well as facility improvements for the child-care center, to offer preschool to 20 additional children.

The finalized amount has yet to be released, but Pathfinder Kids Kampus Interim Administrator and Early Head Start Director Elizabeth Hire said expanding preschool opportunities will help jump-start kids education.

“It gets them ready for kindergarten, not only academicly but socially and emotionally,” Hire said. “They learn how to follow routines, how to be away from their parents, how to walk in a line, how to interact with peers – all of those things you need before you can attend kindergarten.”

Pathfinder Kids Kampus is now accepting applications, and both On My Way Pre-K and Premier Preschool classes start August 8 for the 2018-19 school year. To qualify for the free On My Way Pre-K preschool, children must be 4 by August 1 and must meet certain income eligibility and service needs requirements. Premier Preschool is available for children 3-5 years old and tuition assistance is available for those that qualify.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus will host a free Fun Fair on Saturday, July 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. for families to learn more about the programs and services offered through their not-for-profit organization. There will also be face painting, make-and-take crafts, story time and a cupcake walk.

“We are elated with this expansion opportunity, and so thankful to the Alliance for supporting our work,” Hire said in a statement. “These funds will provide much needed growth for our preschool programs and allows us to have a hand in shaping the future for the youngest members of our community.”
