Three Vikings named Academic All-State

A trio of Huntington North athletes earned Academic All-State First Team honors this spring in various sports while five others earned Honorable Mentions.

Senior Alyssa Voght was named to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) Softball Academic All-State team for Huntington North. Similarly, junior Brock Spahr and senior Shawn Young earned Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Boys’ Track (IATCCC) Academic All-State First Team.

A quintet of Viking tracksters earned Honorable Mention as well in senior Kasey Konz, senior Aaron Hendryx, junior Logan Hippensteel, senior Carson Bolinger and junior Nolan Hughes.

To qualify for the IATCCC award, student-athletes must be a junior or senior, be on the sectional roster and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5. For seniors, a minimum SAT score of 1200 on critical reading and math or ACT score of 26 is required. For juniors, the requirements are the same with the addition of a score of 1140 on PSAT.

For the ICGSA award, athletes must be a senior with a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, an SAT score of 1110 on critical reading or math or an ACT score of 24 and must have been a varsity participant in 50 percent of the contests in the season.

On the softball diamond this spring, Voght hit .262 from the plate with 16 hits, eight runs and eight RBIs. Voght was the best fielder for the Vikings, though, with just two errors in 154 chances for a team-best fielding percentage of .987.

Voght finished the year with a team-high 152 putouts while turning one double play on the season.

On the track, Spahr, Bolinger, Konz and Hendryx competed in the state meet as part of the 3,200-meter relay team. Hughes was apart of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished third in the sectional and competed in the regional meet.
