Boys, Girls Club gear up for summer programs

By Jennifer Peryam - jperyam@h-ponline.com

Registration for summer programming at the Parkview Boys and Girls Club of Huntington County is from 4-7 p.m. May 31 and June 1, 4 and 5, at the club.

Students in grades first through 12 may register for the program, which runs June 7 through August 3. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided.

“We will have educational programs in reading, math and STEM activities,” said Desiree Frederick, the program’s director. Frederick estimated around 200 children participated last summer.

The club offers a variety of summer programming, from “right brain” sessions for artistic children to healthy living activities.

The artist program lasts for 8 weeks, during which students make illustrations and write their own stories. Students will even have the chance to participate in a production of “Alice in Wonderland.”

The healthy living sessions will focus on lifestyle choices children can make right now, such as healthy cooking habits and gardening.

Frederick says the club is a safe place for children to stay while their parents are at work.

“We want to give kids a space to learn over the summer,” she said. “We try to work on making sure we have programs where they won’t lose content they have learned in the spring.”
