Huntington City Council Tuesday approved appropriating additional funds to allow for closure of the city’s landfill.

The council approved $700,000 of additional appropriations with $200,000 being put in the landfill fund for a cover for the landfill. Also included in the additional appropriation is $500,000 being put in the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund for street and alley work.

The council previously approved closing 25 acres of the city’s landfill because it is full to capacity and the closure has been mandated by Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Clerk-Treasurer Christi McElhaney said the funding will be used for covering the landfill.

“The final closure is for a final compost cover on the landfill that we are doing per IDEM regulations,” McElhaney said.

Plans are to have the project that will include putting a six-foot compost cover over the landfill that has three layers completed by the end of this year.

There was also $500,000 that was approved to be placed in the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund for street paving. Paving bids will be opened at the May 21 Board of Works meeting.

There will be a public hearing for the May 29 for voluntary annexation of 321 Safari Trail.

Director of Community Development and Redevelopment Bryn Keplinger said .04 miles of road will be annexed into the city. The petitioner wants to build a home and needs access to sewer.
