Vikings pick up 19th win, stay unbeaten in NE8

Huntington North remained perfect in Northeast 8 Conference (NE8) play on Tuesday with a 7-4 win at home over Leo.

Huntington North jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the second inning and four times in the third.

A quartet of Viking pitchers combined to seal the win. Gage Sandlin was credited with the win, going four innings and giving up one hit and one unearned run with two walks and a strikeout.

Jarret Gray pitched 0.1 innings, giving up a hit, two walks and two runs with a strikeout. Zach Daugherty pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering three hits and a run with a strikeout.

Ian McCutcheon would close the contest in the seventh, slamming the door shut with three strikeouts to earn his third save of the season.

Offensively, Trey Williams finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs while Gray was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run. McCutcheon finished 2-for-4 with two runs.

Levi Bennett added a pair of hits and Daugherty finished with a hit and an RBI.

Huntington North is now 19-1 on the season. 


The Huntington North softball team returned to .500 on the year with a 4-2 win at home over visiting Logansport on Tuesday.

Huntington North scored the first four runs of the game and took advantage of four Berries errors to earn the win. Logansport out-hit the hosts 8-7 on the day.

A two-out error in the first allowed Macy Lange to score and a two-out wild pitch plated a run in the second for the Vikings.

Huntington North would add two more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Kendra Arnold and a Maddie Levy RBI single.

The Berries scored twice in the seventh, but could not piece together a comeback.

Sydney Selvage earned the win on the day, holding the Berries to just one earned run with two strikeouts and a walk in the complete-game effort.

The Vikings are now 9-9 on the season. Huntington North returned to NE8 play on Wednesday against Norwell, but results were unavailable as of Herald Press deadline. 


Facing Leo on Tuesday, the Viking girls’ tennis team was handed its first NE8 loss of the season, falling 3-2 to the Lions.

Jessica Henline picked up a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and Kassidy Thompson won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles for the lone wins.

At No. 3 singles, Tarah Zumbrun fell 6-7 (1-7), 5-7 while the No. 2 doubles team of Braxtyn Maroney and Leann Ringenberg lost 3-6, 5-7.

The No. 1 doubles contest needed three sets to decide a winner on the night with Macy Wohlford and Jule Nogaj losing 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.

Huntington North is now 11-2 on the season and 5-1 in NE8 play.
